The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a world-leading youth development programme which empowers young people with essential skills for life and work. To achieve a Gold Award, young people aged 14–24 design their own challenges, gaining valuable experiences in environments outside of the school and home. They volunteer in their communities, get active to support their wellbeing, learn new skills to build focus and commitment, and complete expeditions that develop teamwork and leadership. At Gold, they also take part in a Residential section away from home. Over seven decades we’ve formally accredited the achievements of millions of young people, with each activity independently verified. Young people who do their DofE report improvements in their confidence, resilience, communication and initiative, along with a stronger sense of wellbeing and belonging.* The DofE is more than an Award – it’s a transformative experience that sets young people up for work and beyond.

It is open to young people in the school year they turn 16 and usually takes at least 18 months to complete. \n\n- Gold requires participants to set and achieve personal goals in five categories: volunteering to support their community, improving their physical and mental wellbeing, developing a skill, completing an expedition with a team of their peers and taking part in a residential activity. \n\n- The Residential section is an activity away from home for five days and four nights. With the majority of participants unknown to each other, it is designed to develop skills and build relationships in a new and unfamiliar environment. \n\n- Participants commit to at least an hour a week for each activity, demonstrating dedication and persistence over time to complete their goals. \n\n- For the Expedition section, participants plan, train for and complete a four-day, three-night team challenge with their peers.
